A New Beginning.....

The tagline of The Mustard Seed of Central Florida has always been New Beginning which has mainly meant a new beginning for individuals and families displaced by disaster. But now, after 26 years of serving residents of Central Florida, The Mustard Seed is in the midst of a new beginning of its own...

The mission of this non-profit has always been to provide household items to families in need, and that will never change but there's a lot that IS changing! Supporters can expect a lot more from The Mustard Seed in the coming months and years, including more events, more programming and partnerships, more ways to connect online and more ambitious goals. We've done a lot in the past, and now it's time to do even more, especially in the times we live in. Even with budgets and staff being scaled back, our commitment to Central Florida has never been greater!

The Mustard Seed has gone Green!

The Mustard Seed has been enviromentally friendly for over 26 years. Last year alone, we were able to recycle over 200 tons of furniture and household items. For 2010, we are joining the Green Initiative and taking our efforts to a whole new level.

Mattress waste poses a real problem. Anywhere between 20-40 million mattresses are disposed of in the USA alone each year, most ending up in landfills. They do not decompose, they create flammable air pockets and can be hazardous to equipment and its operators. All sorts of materials are used in mattresses, buy most common items are fabric, foam, cotton, wood and steel springs. Most of these components can be recycled - in fact, around 90% of a spring mattress is recyclable. The Mustard Seed is now obtaining mattresses for reuse and recycling in the Greater Orlando area and beyond.
