Among those we assist, many are formerly homeless men, women and
children, victims of domestic violence, and those who have lost
all to fire and natural disaster. We also help the elderly,
disabled and those who have had personal tragedy touch their
lives.
Each year over a thousand families receive household goods from
the Furniture Bank and over seven hundred families visit the
Clothing Bank. Most are from Orlando and Orange County, but many
are also from neighboring Central Florida counties such as
Seminole, Osceola, Volusia, and Lake, which do not have similar
programs in place. Each year we distribute an estimated $3
million in furniture, clothing, holiday toys and other household
goods, most of which has been donated by the caring Central
Florida community.
Our families come from many different ethnic backgrounds and are
of all ages, but the overwhelming majority of those who benefit
are children. No one just walks in off the street and gets
furniture. All of our Furniture Bank families have been referred
to us by Central Florida churches and community agencies. Over
400 area agencies refer potential Mustard Seed families,
including: the American Red Cross, the Department of Children
and Families, Harbor House, the Farmworkers' Association,
Coalition for the Homeless, Spouse Abuse, Beta, Centaur, HRS,
AIDS Alliance, Orlando Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army.
In addition, these referring agencies must do a home inspection
to ensure that the families they send to us are truly in need of
our help.
Referring agencies, social workers, counselors, and clergy may
information on specific conditions for acceptance of a referral,
and a list of what supporting documentation and ID their clients
should bring when visiting us.
Prospective Mustard Seed families are then interviewed to verify
eligibility, and so that we can be sure there is a home to
receive the furniture, can assess their specific furniture needs
and help them plan and schedule pickup or delivery. |
